Scaling nature finance for climate action

  • Article

Nature finance can’t wait - and it can’t sit on the sidelines waiting for philanthropic support and grants. It needs to be embedded in business models and financing decisions if we’re going to scale it.

Our new report, Scaling nature finance for climate action, draws on HSBC roundtables with clients, philanthropic partners and industry leaders in Asia’s apparel and soft commodity sectors - two industries that are deeply integrated into global value chains and highly dependent on natural capital.

Report highlights:

• Asia’s exposure is significant: 75% of Asia-Pacific GDP is highly or moderately dependent on natural capital.

• The opportunity is real: a nature-positive economy could generate up to USD10.1 trillion in annual business value by 2030.

• But scaling is hard without changing incentives: forest conservation projects in Southeast Asia can generate only ~USD45–USD80 per hectare in operating profit — often far less than alternative land uses.

At HSBC, we’re building the skills, data and partnerships needed to support customers and help accelerate nature-positive investment at scale.
