Working as ONE to help keep millions of containers on the move
“We are more like friends than partners,” said Clarice Kwa, Senior Vice President, HSBC Corporate and Institutional Banking, referring to our client Ocean Network Express (ONE), one of the world’s biggest container shipping companies.
In an industry where there have been several challenges in recent years – with some of those ongoing – “it is critical to have someone who can support us globally,” said Toshikazu Shiomi, Head of Finance at ONE.
“We are carrying over 12 million containers every year, so we need someone who can handle this very complex business from the banking side,” he said.
And the impressive numbers don’t stop there:
- A fleet size of 2 million containers in constant transit
- More than 260 vessels in operation globally
- Over 165 services to more than 120 countries and territories worldwide.
“HSBC and ONE share a common commitment to the client,” said Mr Shiomi. “Customer service is one of the eight core values for our business – which HSBC also emphasises.”
Thriving through challenges
Our relationship with ONE started in 2017, in Singapore, before quickly expanding to more markets worldwide.
“This is a valuable relationship where our footprint matches theirs and we are their core bank for over 40 markets,” said Clarice.
And it’s a relationship that continues to thrive, despite any challenges that arise in the wider operating environment.
“They are open-minded to new solutions and I genuinely feel we can continue to grow together,” said Izumi Miyake, Senior Vice President, HSBC Corporate and Institutional Banking.
